Primary School Academic Overview

The foundation of the Primary School experience is the Primary Years Programme (PYP). This program is based upon the belief that all students are inquisitive and that children learn best by inquiry. The PYP program is a well recognized, international program developed by the IB. The Academy has developed its own Units of Inquiry and students study up to six units of inquiry every school year.

Preschool 3, Preschool 4 and Kindergarten

Fully trained teachers lead these classes, supported by a full-time assistant teacher in each class. The size of the classes is small, with each child receiving individual attention. The happy, relaxed and informal atmosphere encourages children to feel secure in a learning environment. Learning through play is regarded as a key to education, though from the start the teaching reflects the differing levels and rate of development to promote success.

Grades 1 - 5

Students are exposed to a curriculum that incorporates Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Social Studies and Art. Specialist teachers teach Arabic, Islamic Studies (optional for non-Muslims), Music, Physical Education and Information Technology. The atmosphere in the school is one of stimulation and taking pride in achievements. Priority is given to establishing core skills, while a variety of activities serve a valuable purpose in broadening the students' experience. In all years, the Academy provides teaching in small classes, with excellent facilities and resources.

Senior School Academic Overview

The Senior School curriculum is designed to prepare students for university entrance and culminates in the award of the Qatar Academy High School Diploma. The sequence of courses sets an academically rigorous and challenging program that is varied enough to meet the needs of each Qatar Academy student.

Grades 6-10 follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP), an IB programme. The MYP allows for a broad and balanced education that includes:

  • science
  • humanities
  • languages
  • mathematics
  • technology
  • arts
  • physical education

Grades 9-10 students have some choice over the subjects they study. This choice is made within the framework of the IB

Grades 11-12 comprise the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The Diploma Programme is recognized internationally as a qualification for university entrance and offers a broad and balanced curriculum comprising six academic areas:

  • language A1 (English or Arabic)
  • language A2 (English or Arabic or French or Spanish)
  • experimental sciences
  • individuals and society (humanities)
  • mathematics and computer science
  • arts

Another key component is CAS (Creativity Action Service) where students take part in artistic endeavors (creativity); sports, expeditions, local or international projects (action), and community or social service projects (service).

Both the Middle Years and the Diploma Programmes foster critical thinking, and encourage students to draw connections between areas of knowledge and to use problem-solving techniques and concepts from many disciplines. Our course of studies not only prepares students for success at university but instills in each student an understanding of their own culture and an awareness of other cultures, values, and ways of life.
