University Admissions Process - Information for Students and Parents
Planning for university takes research and preparation. While in grades 9 - 11, students should be accessing resources that will help them make informed decisions about programs, places of study and how to finance their education. Being diligent with school work is extremely important as grades are a key factor in being accepted at competitive universities. However, other factors also play an important role. Extracurricular involvement, summer work or volunteer experiences and standardized test results are also factors universities consider. Students are responsible for determining which universities they want to apply for and ensure that they meet all the entrance requirements and deadlines. Our Guidance Counselor, Ms. Paula Brunning, can provide resources and advice for all stages of the process.
Entrance into university is competitive and in order to compare students from different educational backgrounds and assess their likelihood of success at university, two tests have been developed. These are for admission into all American universities including those in Education City and some in other countries.
SAT - is an aptitude test that covers critical reading, writing and mathematics. The emphasis is on problem solving and critical thinking. It is highly important to be familiar with the test to get good results. There are tuition centers to help with preparation, and there are books and on-line practice tools. Go to www.collegeboard.com for all details. Some universities will also ask for SAT II tests which are subject tests.
ACT - is a skills and knowledge test that covers the range of a good high school English, mathematics, science and writing curriculum. Taking challenging courses and doing well is the best preparation, plus being familiar with the exam format. Practice tests, books and information are all available on www.act.org
Universities also want to ensure that students have the fluency in all areas of English to be successful at university so they require an English proficiency test. In Qatar there are two options:
TOEFL - this test covers reading, writing, speaking and all details are available through www.toefl.org It is accepted by all American and some UK, Canadian and other universities; the QF location offers the internet-based version of the test.
IELTS - this test covers reading, writing, speaking and listening and is accepted by UK, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand and some American universities. The objective of the test is to assess a candidate's ability to understand and communicate in academic and social contexts. All details are available through www.ielts.org or the British Council.

Students must ensure they register by the deadlines indicated on each site, and complete the tests in time for results to reach universities. Each university applied for will need to receive test results; students are responsible for entering the code for each university into the testing organization's site so they will send the official results directly to the universities as well as the candidate.
There will be opportunities for students and parents to speak directly with admissions officers from various universities throughout the year. You are invited and encouraged to attend, as well as to contact Ms. Brunning for questions at any time.
