SCHOOL STRUCTURE

OVERVIEW OF SENIOR SCHOOL

The Senior School strives to provide a supportive environment that challenges each student's academic potential while enhancing self-esteem and personal development. It is the intention of the Senior School to provide an atmosphere where each student can attain an international perspective and sensitivity to cultures other than their own.

The Senior School course of studies is standards-based and delineates what each student should accomplish after completing each subject taken. The program emphasizes:

  • strong foundation in academic skills;
  • inquiry;
  • reflective thinking.

Grades 6-10 organize subject content around the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme.

The IB Middle Years Programme is designed to meet the academic needs of students in Grades 6-10 and to prepare them for the IB Diploma Programme. The program enables students to:

  • develop the skills to become effective learners;
  • relate their classroom learning to the real world;
  • communicate effectively with those whose language and culture are not the same as theirs;
  • see the interconnections between the different subjects studied.

Students follow a broad curriculum involving the study of languages, mathematics, sciences, arts, humanities, technology, and physical education. Grades 6-8 follow a common core curriculum ensuring the foundations laid in the elementary years are effectively developed and built upon. In Grades 9-10 students have some choice over the subjects they study; this choice is made within the framework of the IB Middle Years Programme.

Grades 11-12 organize subject content around the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. This is a two-year university course of study that offers a broad choice of subjects.

The Diploma Programme, for students aged 16-18, is a two-year program that prepares students for college and university. It is reading and writing intensive and emphasizes critical thinking and the application of content knowledge to real-world issues and problems.

Students may be awarded the Qatar Academy High School Diploma by the end of Grade 12 if they are:

  • a full IB diploma candidate or
  • taking at least five IB certificates

This is in addition to other graduating requirements.

At the end of Grade 12 every student will be awarded a Qatar Academy High School Diploma with either the IB full Diploma or five IB certificates.

Qatar Academy's sequence of courses sets an academically rigorous and challenging program that is varied enough to meet the needs of each Senior School student.
